AUTUMN HIKE IN RETEZAT NATIONAL PARK
Retezat National Park is my favourite mountain region of Carpathins. Here you can find the most beautiful glacier lakes and valleys, rocky cliffs, endless pinewood forests and peaks above 2500 m. The landscapes above 1800 m (where the alpine zone begins) shows you breathtaking highest. In mid September I’ve planned with a few mountain lover friend this hike, we were 10 people on the trail.
Poiana Pelegii Meadow (1600 m) – Plaiul Mic Saddle (1879 m) – Păpușa (Doll)-Custura Ridge – The Little Doll Peak (2370 m ) – The Doll Peak (2508 m) – Șaua Pelegii Saddle (2285 m) – Peleaga Valley – Poiana Pelegii Meadow (1600 m ) 8-9 h hike
After leaving our cars at Poiana Pelegii Meadow (1600 m) began our hike with positive attitude, backpacks on our back and a big smile on our faces. It was early in the morning , the air was cold and the sun illuminated our way up to the alpine fields. What can you see on this trail? Above the pine tree line at 1855 m there are two little lakes, the Doll Lakes (1 h hike from the cars). Near the lakes there is a panoramic view with Slăveiu Ridge, Judele Peak (2398 m), Bucura I Peak (2433 m), Bucura II Peak (2378 m), Curmătura Bucurei Saddle (2206 m), Bucura Valley, Piciorul Pelegii Ridge, Șaua Pelegii Saddle (2285 m) and our hike destination the Doll Peak (2508 m). Leaving the Doll Lakes (1855 m) behind the trail leads to the left, to the Custura Peak (2457 m) direction, it is a long way up to the Doll-Custura Ridge. With short breaks and a dinner break we reached the ridge in 2.5 h. From the edge of this mountain ridge we can see Tăurile Custurii glacier lakes on the Ciomfu Mare Valley and Custura Peak (2457 m) located on the right side. In good visibility circumstances we can also see the outlines of Parâng Mountains in the East direction. As we were heading Norh-West, in front of us with a stunning view the highest peaks of Retezat Mountains, Peleaga Peak (2509 m) and Doll Peak (2508 m). In approx…5 hours we’ve reached the highest point of this hike, Doll Peak (2508 m). From the peak we had a 360° view of the mountain region. We were lucky, the clouds have been above us and had a really good visibility.
After 30 minutes on the peak we headed down to the Șaua Pelegii Saddle (2285 m), through Peleaga Valley and arrived at Poiana Pelegii Meadow (1600 m), where our cars have been already waiting for us. The hike took 9 hours all together. Everybody felt a bit tired, but the smiles on my friends faces confirmed that they were satisfied and we had a beautiful day up in the mountains.
